  • Basis for use
    • DUO2 in or near cask should be a geochemical barrier
      • Establish reducing conditions
        • Inhibit spent fuel dissolution
        • Keep radionuclides in less soluble oxidation state
      • Reaction products should expand to seal water ingress
      • Saturate incoming water with uranium to inhibit spent fuel dissolution
    • DUO2 inside cask reduces radiation at waste package surface
      • Fewer radiation-induced reactions such as radiolysis
      • Lower dose if movement or recovery is needed
